Located on Stockholm’s Södermalm island, this renovated duplex apartment redefines a home that had gradually lost many of its original qualities through previous alterations. The project sought to establish a clearer identity for the interior, creating a cohesive whole while allowing each room to retain its own character. To better support the clients’ lifestyle, the kitchen, dining and living areas were reorganised into a single open space for everyday living and entertaining, alongside an office, bathroom, terrace and an upper-level bedroom.

Materiality plays a central role throughout the apartment, with large, continuous surfaces giving everyday elements a sculptural presence. A hand-brushed stainless steel kitchen becomes the focal point of the main living space, its finish carefully developed to soften reflections and respond to changing daylight. The shifting appearance of the steel is balanced by the warmth and texture of the original pine flooring, creating a dialogue between existing and new materials.

On the upper floor, the bedroom is defined by a geometric composition of black and white flooring that draws attention towards the floor, offsetting the effects of the room’s low ceilings and angled walls. Natural light reinforces the material palette, highlighting striped textiles, Sapele timber and the linear patterns that continue into the bathroom through its tiled surfaces.

Throughout the apartment, restrained natural materials are punctuated by moments of colour at key transitions. A pink wardrobe and an ochre-carpeted staircase introduce subtle contrasts between the social and private areas of the home without disrupting the overall composition. Together, these interventions create an interior where material, light and colour shape a calm yet distinctive domestic environment.
